![]() No less bloody than the first, the Second Succession War also ended inconclusively, grinding to a halt in 2864. The Second Succession War began in 2830 when Jinjiro Kurita launched all-out offensives against the neighboring realms, provoked in part by ComStar secretly feeding information to the Lyran Commonwealth. Nine out of every ten WarShips and nearly half of all JumpShips had been destroyed during the war, but with the heavy targeting of the shipbuilding industry the ability to replace these losses was virtually nil. The next few years were dedicated to rebuilding, but with their crippled infrastructure and the deaths of so many scientists and technicians the task was immense. ![]() None of the Successor States were any closer to their original goal, but the scale of the atrocities which had been committed meant none were willing to make a lasting peace either. When the war finally ground to a halt in 2821, it was more out of sheer exhaustion than anything else. The war would last for 35 years and become the single bloodiest conflict in human history: ignoring the Ares Conventions, all sides made use of weapons of mass destruction, wiping out entire cities and rendering whole planets uninhabitable. ![]() The Successor States invaded each other with their massive armies while Jerome Blake seized Terra himself to serve as the headquarters for the newly christened ComStar. When Coordinator Minoru Kurita unilaterally declared himself the new First Lord in 2786, the other House Lords quickly followed suit, touching off the First Succession War. In the power vacuum which followed, the Great Houses began to seize worlds of the Terran Hegemony for themselves. His plan, Operation Exodus, saw himself and the vast bulk of the SLDF disappear from the Inner Sphere on 5 November 2784, never to be seen again. When the recruiters began soliciting Star League Defense Force units, General Kerensky decided there was only one way to save the spirit of the Star League. The House Lords were unmoved though and began to massively buildup their militaries, recruiting even among Rim Worlds Republic prisoners. Īlthough there was popular support for his seizing power, General Kerensky was determined to save the Star League, and for two years he shuttled between the leaders of the Great Houses in an attempt to get them to reconcile. Therefore, we officially dissolve the High Council on this day, August 12, in the year 2781". It is our opinion that the inability to find a new First Lord makes any further decision-making impossible. Realization eventually settled in that there could be no agreement on the matter, and finally a short statement was given to the media: "After long months of intense negotiations, we have reached an impasse on the question of who should become the next leader of the Star League. ![]() įor the next ten months the Council Lords attempted to convince their peers to elect them as the new First Lord entire planets were up for sale as they haggled with each other to gain support for their claim. On 18 October they formally stripped General Kerensky of his title as Protector of the Star League. The other was that Aleksandr Kerensky, hero of the Civil War, would not become the next First Lord. One of the few things the Council Lords could agree on was the appointment of Jerome Blake as Minister of Communications to restore the League's communications network. The bickering began almost immediately as, with the death of the Cameron line, the most pressing matter became determining who would assume the position of First Lord. In the wake of the Star League Civil War, the High Council reconvened in the ruins of Unity City on 10 October 2780. ![]()

The giraffe's neck is elongated by heterochrony, extension of the time for the embryonic development of these bones. Structure Side view of a typical cervical vertebra Despite greatly differing neck lengths, okapi (left) and giraffe (right) both have seven cervical vertebrae. The remainder of this article focuses upon human anatomy. In humans, cervical vertebrae are the smallest of the true vertebrae and can be readily distinguished from those of the thoracic or lumbar regions by the presence of a foramen (hole) in each transverse process, through which the vertebral artery, vertebral veins, and inferior cervical ganglion pass. Most mammals have seven cervical vertebrae, with the only three known exceptions being the manatee with six, the two-toed sloth with five or six, and the three-toed sloth with nine. The vertebral transverse processes of mammals are homologous to the cervical ribs of other amniotes. In lizards and saurischian dinosaurs, the cervical ribs are large in birds, they are small and completely fused to the vertebrae. In sauropsid species, the cervical vertebrae bear cervical ribs. Truncal vertebrae (divided into thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in mammals) lie caudal (toward the tail) of cervical vertebrae. In tetrapods, cervical vertebrae ( SG: vertebra) are the vertebrae of the neck, immediately below the skull. ![]() ![]() Click Start in the Convert window to start the recording. To specify a video container type, select the MP4/MOV radio button.Click the button with the crossed tools which is located next to the Profile field.Select the Display the output check box.In the recording’s Profile field, select Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4).In the Convert window, click Browse to select the destination file for your recording. Now, click on the Audio option in the VLC media player and shift the cursor to Audio Device. ![]() (2012, December 18) Valence Electrons and the Periodic Table. If the valence shell of an element is full, such as with a noble gas, then the element does not want to gain or lose an electron.įor example, alkali metals, which all have a valency of 1, want to lose that one electron and are likely to form ionic bonds (such as in the case of NaCl, or table salt) with a Group 17 element, which has a valency of 7 and wants to gain that one electron from the alkali metal (Group 1 element) to form a stable valency of 8.įor more on valence electrons and how they're related to the periodic table, I strongly recommend this video:Ĭitations: Tyler Dewitt. All of the 1A elements have one valence electron. A group is a vertical column of the periodic table. They determine how "willing" the elements are to bond with each other to form new compounds. Remember that Mendeleev arranged the periodic table so that elements with the most similar properties were placed in the same group. Valence electrons are responsible for the reactivity of an element. You can easily determine the number of valence electrons an atom can have by looking at its Group in the periodic table.įor example, atoms in Groups 1 and 2 have 1 and 2 valence electrons, respectively.Ītoms in Groups 13 and 18 have 3 and 8 valence electrons, respectively. Valence electrons are the electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom. To form a covalent bond, one electron from the halogen and one electron from another atom form a shared pair.įor example, in #"H–F"#, the dash represents a shared pair of valence electrons, one from #"H"# and one from #"F"#. This octet rule holds for elements in the second and third periods (or rows) of the periodic table. To form an ionic bond, a halogen atom can remove an electron from another atom in order to form an anion (e.g., #"F"^"-", "Cl"^"-"#, etc.). This need to gain a filled valance electron shell by having 8 valence electrons is known as the octet rule and explains why certain elements are stable or unstable despite being electrically neutral. From the element’s position on the periodic table, predict the valence shell electron configuration for each atom. Tin’s electron configuration is Kr5 s 2 4 d 10 5 p 2. They have one less electron configuration than a noble gas, so they require only one additional valence electron gain an octet. Sn is located in the second column of the p block, so we expect that its electron configuration would end in p 2. ![]() ![]() The most reactive nonmetals are the halogens, e.g., #"F"# and #"Cl"#. Nonmetals tend to attract additional valence electrons to form either ionic or covalent bonds. They need to lose only one or two valence electrons to form positive ions with a noble gas configuration. The most reactive metals are those from Groups 1 and 2. Generally, elements in Groups 1, 2, and 13 to 17 tend to react to form a closed shell with a noble gas electron configuration ending in #ns^2 np^6#. Elements whose atoms have the same number of valence electrons are grouped together in the Periodic Table. ![]() ![]()

They replaced the box and about 20 feet of wiring connected to it, and conducted thorough tests to make sure the problem was resolved. That earlier launch try was called off when a heater used to protect a critical power unit on the shuttle failed just hours before liftoff. "It's going to be Endeavour's 25th flight, and me and my crew are excited to be a part of it." In use, the boosters would be attached to the external tank to help the shuttle’s main engines lift off. It began in July with precise installation of the bottom segments of the side boosters, known as aft skirts, for the first time outside of a NASA facility.
